Among many sheep
Our dear friend Maurizio has a flock of sheep of different breeds such as Bergamasco - Biellesi grazing on native grapes from the Fiemme Valley, that he leads to a high point in the mountain - a high peak of the Small Dolomites - during the holiday season he brings them down again to the valley at the time of year when most of the ewes are pregnant.
After being fleeced in less than a day by Gianmarco, the shearer from New Zealand - who travels the world to shear sheep wherever he can, with the speed and professionalism of someone who knows his job well - in these early days of November, they return to Pilcante, where they will stay until next summer. Marta, Anna and myself shared this unique and amusing experience. When they say “Don’t be a sheep” it is to dissuade you from joining others without being convinced, to join something just because the others are, to follow a group without asking yourself if you want to go in another direction.
Because sheep are so: always all together, if one stops, all sheep stop. If one is frightened by the bark of the dogs, all the other are frightened. It’s incredible how they are bound, or how much they depend on each other .... And then I think: why one must take a flock of sheep in these years when everything is so quick and nobody lives his time? And I give a look to these animals and to these men that take care of them and I realize that there is always one thing that makes the difference. You can choose to be what you want to be, to do what you want to do, when and where you want, but it’s the love that you put in what you do that changes things and that lets you live with intensity.
